Manager Biography - Jeff McIntosh
League
Along with Ballentine, McIntosh is the only manager left from the inaugural 1989 season. That year, McIntosh realized immediate success as his Mets went all the way to the championship round, before losing to Boston. The winning attitude failed to foment, however, as the Mets finished a disappointing 18 games below .500 the subsequent year. McIntosh returned in '92, this time at the command of the Seattle Mariners. The Emerald City watched McIntosh claim his only division title and his only 100 win season. Seattle was dispatched in the divisional round, though, ending hopes for a title run. McIntosh resigned his post in Seattle for a tour in the Army, but returned to help brighten the rainy skies of the Pacific Northwest in 1995. It wasn't to be though, as the Mariners never quite got it together. Despite winning more than they lost, Seattle failed to make it to the playoffs - a McIntosh first.
McIntosh decided it wasn't meant to be in Seattle, so he opted for greener pastures - a return to the Big Apple. And that made all the difference. McIntosh resurrected his career piloting New York to a playoff appearance. Once there, the Mets completed a title run that was nothing short of amazing. New York pulled off upset after upset. And, like the bird for whom the league's origin was named, the Mets rose from the ashes and stunned the baseball world by coming back from a 3-2 Giants series lead and a four run deficit in Game 6. Game 7 was anticlimactic, as Tom Glavine shutout San Francisco for the win and McIntosh's first ring. The year 2000 was anything but a repeat as the Mets underachieved all year. Though they caught fire in September to make things interesting, the Mets failed to make the playoffs and McIntosh was fired at the end of the year. Arizona, also victims of a bleak 2000, hope McIntosh can regain his magic touch.
Personal
McIntosh was born in Page, Arizona and spent time in the Seattle-Tacoma area before settling in Phoenix. He was a gifted baseball player as a youth and had all the physical tools to take him far before nagging injuries and poor coaching derailed any chances of success. Undaunted, McIntosh enlisted in the Army where he served for 4 years. During this time, McIntosh's son Zane was born. McIntosh moved to Montgomery, Alabama in 1997 where he met his future wife, Kim. The couple resides in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida where McIntosh is a law enforcement officer.
