Season began on Philadelphia's disabled list as Schilling recovered from off-season arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder...after rehab work in the Phils' minor league system, he made his debut on April 30, losing a 4-3 decision at home to the Cardinals. Evened his record with a complete game 6-0 win in Atlanta on May 6, scattering 11 hits and a walk with 9 K's, his first of 2 route-going shutouts over the Braves in 2000...the win was also the 100th of his major league career. |

Manager Biography - Mike Ballentine
League
Ballentine is one of the league's original owners. Since the league's first commissioner skippered the Chicago Cubs, Ballentine agreed to pilot the St. Louis Cardinals. While at the helm of the Redbirds, Ballentine successfully guided them to a playoff appearance during their first two seasons, losing to Detroit in the first round in 1989 and to Milwaukee in 1990. Ballentine jumped ship in '92 and captured his first league championship with the Cleveland Indians. Ballentine returned to the Cardinals the following year where he was met with numerous injuries and an underachieving team. Unfortunately, the losing continued in 1994 and Ballentine resigned to take the manager position with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Once again, a fresh start was just what the doctor ordered as Ballentine and the Dodgers enjoyed a championship-winning season defeating the Pirates, 4 games to 3. Ballentine decided his work was done in the City of Angels and returned for his unprecedented third stint onboard the Cardinal ship. This time, the Redbirds soared as Ballentine won his second title in a row and third overall. Ballentine once again sought after new horizons and landed his dream job - Chicago Cubs field boss. In his two seasons at the Friendly Confines, the Cubs have captured two division titles, winning the most games in the league over the course of that span. However, the Cubs were upset by the Giants in the divisional round in '99 and were defeated by the Padres in last year's championship as San Diego became the first unowned team to win a title. At the close of the 2000 campaign, Ballentine stepped down as league commissioner ending a nine-year tenure, citing a need to spend more time on his career as well as the Cubs.
Ballentine enjoys the second best managerial winning percentage in league history, all the while serving as the only manager in the league to compete in every season. Moreover, he has captured the most division titles as well as the most championships. Though a student of the Whitey Herzog school of managing, a firm belief in good pitching, defense and speed, the Cubs led the league in scoring last season, the first such finish for any Ballentine-led ballclub.
Personal
Ballentine recently graduated from the University of Tulsa College of Law. He will make his home in Wetumpka, Alabama and endeavors to begin his legal career as a prosecutor. However, Ballentine hopes to enter politics in the future. He has lived in Alabama since 1994, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1998. Ballentine was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where the league also saw its birth. Ballentine is currently single.
