Manager Biography - Jon Jonson
League
Jonson joined the league in 1992 and quickly established himself as one of the craftiest field bosses around. In fact, Jonson is the current leader in overall managerial winning percentage, having spent six seasons at the helm of the Phillies. Jonson assumed control of Philadelphia in 1992 and guided them to their first playoff appearance. An upset loss to the eventual champion Indians left Jonson with a bitter taste and he was determined to return the following year. And boy did he ever. The 1993 Phillies remain the benchmark of league success as they steam-rolled every team that had the misfortune of playing them. Remarkably, the Phils lost only two series all season long en route to an incredible 122-40 record as well as the league title. However, there would be no dynasty as the 116-46 Phillies of 1994 were astonishingly defeated by the champion Cubs in the playoffs. The next two seasons, the Phils played sub-.500 baseball and Jonson resigned his position as manager.
The year 2000 brought renewed vigor and excitement as Jonson returned to pilot the Phils once again. Not surprisingly, Philadelphia captured the league's best mark, led by MVP Shawn Green, winning 98 games. However, the Phils were felled by eventual champion San Diego in the divisional round.
Personal
Though born in Reno, Nevada, Jonson grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he befriended other league managers Mike Ballentine, Jason Kent and Jeff McIntosh in the seventh grade. The last of the Mohicans, Jonson is the only one to remain in the Valley of the Sun. However, that is due to change as Jonson has decided to step down from his software analyst position so that he might return to school. He plans on moving to Alabama to room with Ballentine and begin attending Auburn University at Montgomery this summer. Jonson hopes to enter law school thereafter and pursue a career in either criminal or constitutional law.
